The wines are made by Mike Eaton from Terravin Wines in Marlborough who wants to quench both the soul and ones thirst.

Aromas of soft ripe peaches, pears and some nutty complexity from aging in oak. Its full body and aromas make it all the way around your mouth. Friends of AALBORG TAFFEL Akvavit could say the same thing in 1846, because the recipe has been identical in all the years since as is the result: a crystal clear aquavit that is full of character and is best enjoyed chilled with herring and other good food preferably in cheerful company. You may like to also try it with gorgonzola and egg yolk.

Michael Cooper describes it as rich, vibrant and supple.

The 2004 vintage has to be one of their best. This Merlot was harvested from a low cropping, free draining vineyard which influences the concentrated flavours of this wine. Hand-crafted using traditional European winemaking techniques then matured in quality oak.

Rich and ripe this wine displays a wonderful aroma of cassis, cedar and spice. Concentrated berry fruits and soft lingering tannins fill the palate.
Buy 'Passion and Patience - A Wine Story' on DVD to see how a hand-crafted wine like this is is made.
Pinot Noir was introduced to the coast of Pesaro by the French administration during the Napoleonic Empire. The soil of calcareous sandstone and the cool microclimate along this elevated section of Italys Adriatic coast, were considered to be ideal for the cultivation of this variety. From 1861, for five generations of winegrowers, the Mancini family have preserved and reproduced the original clones, on the best terrains of Natural Park of Monte San Bartolo. Among these hills, the area of Focara in particular has distinguished itself over the years for the production of Pinot Noir with a strong personality and with the typical character of this grape variety.

The Impero wine, Empire in Italian, is the culmination of a long history of the white vinification of Pinot Noir. This wine is produced by softly pressing whole bunches with the utmost care and attention to minimise skin contact and colour extraction. It is then barrel fermented and aged in barrel for 12 months. This is an impressive and distinctive wine, showing spice from the wood and bright red apple/peach aromas. It has a broad structure in the mouth, not unlike a Cte de Nuits white balanced and positive, with a herbal freshness. Worth every cent and more.

This has a wonderful nose and the palate is generous, warm and spicy with complex flavours of cassis and plum. Savoury cedar oak and long soft tannins finish this wine beautifully. Age from 3 to 12 years, earlier for a more fruit driven style.

The grapes were all hand picked from a mixture of our estate 20 year old vines and some fruit from Gimblett Road. The fruit was crushed and de-stemmed in 2000 litre tanks, cold macerated for 3 days and fermented with a mixture of wild and inoculated yeasts. Temperatures reached 32C with a 4 hourly hand plunging and daily rack and returns. The wine then spent 28 days undergoing extended maceration. The individual components were fermented separately and then blended at 12 months, undergoing 6 months ageing as a single parcel.
Buy 'Passion and Patience - A Wine Story' on DVD to see how a hand-crafted wine like this is is made.

The result is a rounded and integrated wine with a luscious creamy texture. Beautifully ripe tropical and stone-fruit characters and a back bone of toasty oak integrated with acid means that this wine will cellar well for many years.

Hand harvested at 24-25 Brix, 40% of the grapes were given 6-10 hours skin contact, the rest were whole bunch pressed before the free run juice was fermented in 50% new oak of which 95% was French and 5% American. 4 different types of yeast were used including some wild ferments. The wine was aged for 11 months with weekly stirring of the lees using 5 different barrel makers.
Basket Press is made only in exceptional vintages and only from the best parcel of grapes from Clearview's Coastal Hawkes Bay Vineyards. Grapes are hand picked, basket pressed* and aged in the finest new french oak for 12 months. The results, as you would expect are stunning.

The wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. All fruit was hand picked and fermented individually with 3 hourly hand plunging. The individual parcels were blended after 18 months in oak barrel. The wine was subsequently aged a further 12 months in new French Oak barriques. Due to the limited volume of quality fruit needed for this wine, less than 50 dozen bottles were produced.

The nose is extremely powerful and concentrated, with intense dark berry, cassis and plum at the core, with nuances of mint, earth and game supporting. On palate, the richness and ripeness of the fruit is manifest in sweetness, but kept in check by layers of leather and tar complexities and a mass of spicy oak. The tannins are very fine-grained, somewhat overwhelmed by the opulence. Yet this has the structure and density to age 15-20 years without hesitation. Less than 50 dozen were made.

*NOTE: A basket press consists of a large basket that is filled with the crushed grapes. Pressure is applied through a plate that is forced down onto the fruit. The mechanism to lower the plate is often either a screw or a hydraulic device. The juice flows through openings in the basket. The basket style press was the first type of mechanized press to be developed, and its basic design has not changed in nearly 1000 years.
Buy 'Passion and Patience - A Wine Story' on DVD to see how a hand-crafted wine like this is is made.

With quality rather than demand determining when The Endeavour will be made, winemaker Tim Turvey said a release could be a one in 15yr event.

Endeavour was made using exceptional hand-picked fruit, from their oldest Mendoza vines. The free-run juice was run directly to barrel without clarification. The juice underwent fermentation with its own naturally occurring wild yeasts. Regular lees stirring protected the wine through its first winter then natural malo-lactic fermentation took place in the spring as temperatures warmed up. The wine spent in total 2 years in New Grand Cru French oak.

Endeavour was made with minimal intervention and natural deposits may form. It is a pure expression of the Te Awanga terroir, made from vines grafted, planted and tended for 24 years. It is absolutely unique!

The wine is boxed and presented in a red cloth bag which honours the first item traded by Captain James Cook at Cape Kidnappers, Te Awanga with local Maori on his discovery visit in 1769. This will drink well in 2012 but it has the pedigree to last to 2015 and beyond. Enjoy with crayfish or a rich seafood dish and sauce. Extremely limited.

Low yielding fruit from a single vineyard in Martinborough was hand harvested, then hand-plunged in open concrete fermenters. Total skin contact was a full month, typical in making the great wines of Burgundy but unusual in New Zealand. This practice sacrifices colour and primary fruit in favour of complexity, savouriness, finer tannins and more longevity.
Hand basked-pressed, then matured for 18 months in older French oak barriques, this is a Pinot to meditate over, delivering new layers of complex flavour with every sniff, including dried cherry, raspberry, truffle, dark chocolate and wild roses. The dense mid-palate is balanced by fine acidity and rich tannins. From Master of Wine, Steve Bennett MW, this new release must be regarded as one of New Zealands greatest dry Rieslings. From low yielding fruit grown on an exceptional gravelly single vineyard in Waipara, hand harvested then very gently pressed, resulting in impressive delicacy and finesse.
Long, slow fermention with natural indigenous yeasts, followed by lees ageing adds to the complexity, richness and depth of this wine, almost unparalleled in the world of kiwi Riesling. Big, bold characterful wine, this concentrated and complex dry Riesling is extremely seductive. Lifted aromas of pepper, spice, dark berries, tar and anise. Densely textured and with outstanding structure there is masses of flavour on the palate which shows concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry and spicy oak and a rich powerful finish. Nice deep colour, the palate is smoothly textured and richly flavoured with plenty of plum and blackcurrant fruit flavours, a nice touch of spice and just enough grip on the finish. Juicy, well balanced and excellent value.

What impressed me though was how elegant and fresh the wine finished, this is a lovely new batch and you should do very well with it. "Strong bead, vigorous, this is freshly disgorged and lively bubbly, light gold in colour, with heady redcurrant and cherry aromatics, in the mouth the wine is rich and bready and creamy, a lush, fuller bodied style, yet with plenty of racy acidity to counterbalance the fruit intensity. This is a big flavoured, fuller style of Champagne, yet with great poise and sophistication. Champagne lovers will be impressed."

A truly magnificent Champagne which is the 'dark horse' of the Cattier range, proving to be a real eye-opener with the Champagne connoisseur.Made from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier. The bottle appropriately conveys the richness of this straw coloured Champagne, which provides hints of raspberry and violets. This distinct, yet complex, Champagne presents a full-bodied taste and partners well with red meat, game and fish as well as foods that are spicy, savoury or sweet.

She visited just 12 wineries in Marlborough. When she tasted the 2009 Te Ahu she said it reminded her of Pavillon Blanc from Chateau Margaux which sells for around $130.00!

French Sommelier Jean-Marie Pratt who has been Head Sommelier at Gordon Ramsays for the past 3 years said the Te Ahu is with no doubt one of the best three Sauvignons from NZ. "When tasting the Te Ahu Sauvignon Blanc, one would straight away sense there is something different in the wines of Terravin than most of the other wines in NZ. This has a star-bright and appealing colour, the nose is discreet to start but shows subtle notes of citrus, white fruits and flowers. It slowly opens up in the glass and delivers much more minerally notes such as flint and pebble. On the palate the wine is dry and focused and displays similar fruity and mineral notes reminiscent from the nose. It is ample and textured with a precise and marked acidity, all in harmony and balance.
I would suggest decanting this wine if consumed now - I think this wine has the ability to age and believe it will remain fresh and vibrant for another 3-4 years. I think it will then develop mature tertiary aromas but still good to drink for another 3-5 years. It reminds me of a Sancerre by Francois Cotat - one of the top Loire Valley Vignerons. This suggests that Marlborough SB, when made in a hand-crafted and serious style, can compete with the best Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume."

Fermented in 500 litre barrels and aged for 11 months before bottling this is, as Mike Eaton so rightly states "The Te Ahu Sauvignon Blanc is a new direction, a new pathway for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc". Production is limited and the price is sure to rise in the coming years. An absolute must.
Buy 'Passion and Patience - A Wine Story' on DVD to see how a hand-crafted wine like this is is made.

These are selling incredibly fast.

It's a longstanding myth that white wine does not need aeration. The truth is that white wine displays the same improvements with aeration as red wine. Vinturi for White Wine has different internal dimensions and flow rates. The result is perfect aeration specifically for white wine.

Building on the winning design of the Vinturi Red Wine Aerator, engineers have modified the reservoir and air ducts to accommodate white wine's unique composition. The Vinturi White Wine Aerator provides a more vigorous aeration flow than its red wine counterpart, mixing just the right amount of air with your whites to enhance their character. Opens up young, full-bodied whites especially well. Comes with a no-drip base and a travel pouch. Aerator and base are dishwasher safe. Travel pouch is machine washable.

Very interesting flavours going on with this wine which is made from grapes from officially New Zealands oldest Pinotage vines, which are over 40 years old, influencing much of the complex flavours.

Bright in its ruby crimson colour, attractively scented, floral with hints of lavender and berry. Creamy oak fills the palate which is ripe, juicy and velvety textured with fruit intensity and oak complexity to the backbone. Well integrated acidity and a touch of Pinotage's signature rusticity to the finish together with a spicy flourish makes this a very good and utterly enjoyable red wine. Even better the next day. A real gem.

I have been a long-time supporter of owner and winemaker Mike Eaton from Terravin and have always said this man's wines will be some of the most sought after from New Zealand. You hear wineries say their focus is on quality, to the point it's a bit of a clich, but Mike must be the only winemaker in New Zealand not to produce a wine every vintage. Why? Followers of Terravin are now used to having only the best, highest quality wines available from New Zealand and are getting used to the fact that the next vintage will be better than the last - if that's possible. The whole Terravin range is fantastic, with the Reserve Hillside Pinot being an absolute stand-out.

Bob Campbell 97/100 Gourmet Traveller. "The merits of selecting the best fruit from a hillside vineyard are obvious in this intense, complex wine. The layers of dark fruit, spice and oak flavours and silken texture in combination are particularly seductive".

Robert Parker 93/100. "Ripe, sweet lifted nose of plum, wild strawberry and violets. The palate is full-bodied with pure ripe plum and raspberry fruit, very well balanced and elegant Supple and rounded towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. A little gem". This is great drinking now but will cellar to 2013 - 2015. Traditionally, decanters were used to aerate wine. For some, decanting is time consuming, cumbersome, and inconvenient. The Vinturi speeds up this process with ease and convenience - you can just pop it in your pocket if you're going out for the evening. Perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass. Especially good for European and NZ Bordeaux style reds and young wines.

Simply hold Vinturi over a glass and pour the wine through. Vinturi draws in and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time, allowing your wine to breathe instantly. You'll notice a better bouquet, enhanced flavours and smoother finish. It's that fast. It's that easy. Comes with a no-drip stand and sediment filter. A must for all.

A fruit driven wine from Marlborough with hints of botrytis influence. The initial sweet entry is well balanced with crisp acidity and a refreshingly dry finish. It is just 12% alcohol and is best served lightly chilled. The wine is succulent but not cloying with excessive residual sugar. The perfect complement to cheese, pate and fruit platters. I was treated to the most amazing hospitality and the finest Champagne that anyone could ask for. I also was most honoured to have a personal tour around the cellars and winery by the man himself, the finest gentleman you will ever meet, Mr Jean-Jacques CATTIER.

On my stay at Cattier, it confirmed to me that Cattier are about two things. "Quality of the Wine and the people who are behind it." Which brings me instantly to Cattier's main man, Philippe BIENVENU. He has been with Cattier since 1995. We have been communicating for many years by phone and email, which has been great, but once we met in person, Philippe and I 'instantly' connected, as well as with his wonderful staff. I felt like I was 'home'. I am most thankful to him and everyone at Cattier for our most memorable stay. I miss them so much and will always feel like family to me.
Fine Champagne Magazine (the worlds only International Champagne publication), ranks the worlds top 100 Champagnes from their recent blind tasting of 1,000 brands. Armand de Brignac topped the field with the No. 1 ranking!

In the issue, editor Essi Avellan writes, We witnessed in our glasses a fine, smooth, and creamy Champagne with underlying power and great mineral freshness. Classic, restrained, and energetic in style, it has everything a truly great Champagne can offer. Its accentuated fruit-forwardness is what makes it so irresistibly palatable today. Armand de Brignacs flashy golden bottle is eye-catching in the true meaning of the expression. It is always rewarding when the content of the bottle matches its price and reputation. We were thrilled that the Champagne, appreciated by the rich and famousdelivered so perfectly on the connoisseurs collective palate.
In the magazines listing by rank of the top-rated Champagnes, Armand de Brignac is described as follows:Pale lemony color. Smooth peach nose with pear and floral notes. Complex with mineral smokiness, restraint, honey and spicy finesse. Creamy, foamy palate with good freshness and tropical fruit. Linear with compact fruit and wonderful length. Enjoyable today but there is great potential ahead.

I am thrilled to announce the debut of this great Champagne in NZ and of the film on the story and history of Armand de Brignac, the Number One-Rated Champagne in the World produced by our very own Champagne Cattier. The film was shot at the Cattier vineyards and cellars in the village of Chigny-les-Roses, Champagne where I visited last year with the most amazing welcome from all at Cattier. It is now available for viewing online!

This beautiful film covers the background of Armand de Brignac, the methods of its creation, and introduces all of the people behind the Champagne, including father and son winemakers Jean-Jacques 'Papa' and Alexandre Cattier and Commercial Director and most great friend of mine Philippe Bienvenu.
Click here to watch the video.

White chocolate, blackberries, cassis, peppery, full-bodied, dense, fruit forward and beautifully complex.
I've had many people say this is their pick for red wine of the year. Dozens and dozens of this were sold with many taking two or three cases. Drinking very well now but make sure you decant this for a good hour to make the flavours really open up. One of the best you'll see from the Barossa.

They have very successfully married traditional winemaking with a state-of-the-art facility.

This chardonnay is a fabulous wine, with an almost perfect combination of old world depth and complexity and new world fruit. Fully barrel fermented and having undergone 100% malolactic fermentation this is a powerful wine that is still very young (the winery itself suggests a cellaring time of 8 - 15 years). I could wax on about the rich medley of flavours, but the most remarkable thing is the length. It's a wine you certainly can't drink very fast. It's in a different league to any New World chardonnay I've tried and $57.95 is a veritable bargain for the experience it provides.

Cherrycake and spice aromatics, solid, chunky berry flavours and a ripe, round mouthfeel. This vintage has finesse and structure and has to be the best value Otago pinot on the market.

This wine has amazed everyone who tries it for its quality and value. Sourced from a single vineyard with grape yields less than half most pinot noirs, which makes a lot less wine but which gives added concentration.
