Cattier Visit March 2009
In March 2009 I spent 2 weeks in Champagne at the luxurious accommodation so generously offered to me at the Cattier Home in Chigny Le Roses in Champagne, just outside the main city of Reims. I was treated to the most amazing hospitality and the finest Champagne that anyone could ask for. I also was most honoured to have a personal tour around the cellars and winery by the man himself, the finest gentleman you will ever meet, Mr Jean-Jacques CATTIER. On my stay at Cattier, it confirmed to me that Cattier are about two things. "Quality of the Wine and the people who are behind it." Which brings me instantly to Cattier's main man, Philippe BIENVENU. He has been with Cattier since 1995. We have been communicating for many years by phone and email, which has been great, but once we met in person, Philippe and I 'instantly' connected, as well as with his wonderful staff. I felt like I was 'home'. I am most thankful to him and everyone at Cattier for our most memorable stay. I miss them so much and will always feel like family to me. I can not wait to see them again.Ben Naden New Zealand Agent for Champagne Cattier

Undurraga Carmenere 2007
NZD $11.95
Chile’s signature grape, carmenère (sometimes spelled carménère or carmenere), is the “lost grape of Bordeaux.” Known also as “grand vidure,” it was originally one of the major grapes of the Médoc region. Even under the best of circumstances, it was a difficult grape to grow in Bordeaux, since it needed more heat to ripen than other Bordeaux grapes and, worse, it often caught coulure, a disease that caused the grapes to drop long before they were ripe for harvest. An 1870s plague of phylloxerae (vine-munching, aphid-like insects) that destroyed several million acres of European vineyards finished off carmenère for good. Or so everyone thought. This wine is made with selected Carmenere grapes grown in Chile's Central Valley. It has an intense violet colour and displays exuburant fruit aromas and a dominant varietal character. On the palate, ripe tannins make it soft and round. It is perfect with pasta, white meats and mild cheese.
-
Undurraga Merlot 2007
NZD $11.95
Undurraga is one of Chile’s oldest wineries. Five generations of the Undurraga family have proudly managed the winery maintaining tradition while successfully expanding the vineyards and modernizing the wine cellars. Their vineyards are in the Maipo Valley and Colchagua Valley south of Santiago. This is rich with plumy fruit and a hint of earthiness that gives Chilean wines their personality. A mouthful of smooth ripe tannins with cocoa flavours on the finish.
-
Rupe Ai Sassi Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2008
NZD $12.95

-
Mt Hector Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2007
NZD $12.95
If you liked the Waimarie Chardonnay, this one is definitely worth trying. This Chardonnay is sourced from the Ngatarawa triangle in Hawke's Bay. It is a rich style of Chardonnay with the accent on strong fruit flavours. Ripe melon, nectarine and summer peach aromas abound with toasty oak hints of cedar and spice and a long, full, yet soft finish. You could pay well over $20 for a Chardonnay of this quality.
-
Tranquillity Bay Pinot Gris 2008
NZD $12.95
The Best you'll find for the priceI've had so many customers say, "I haven't had a Pinot Gris this good for ages - and it's $12.95?" Under its normal label this sells very well at $19.95. A dry, fruit driven style, especially suitable to have with food, the wine has an aromatic nose with pear and stone fruit aromas leading to a touch of spice and a honeyed fruit-driven palate with generous mouthfeel and a soft smooth finish. This powers out of the shop by the dozen, and everyone comes back for more.
-
Tranquillity Bay Chardonnay 2008
NZD $12.95
Normally $17.95A wonderful follow up from the record breaking Sauvignon Blanc. Malolactic fermentation and regular lees stirring gives it an additional mealiness and toasted biscuit character.
-

Terriero Negroamaro 2007
NZD $12.95
Negroamaro Bargain. Was $18.95 The negroamaro grape, native to Puglia, is rapidly gaining world attention for producing wines that are arresting in their flavour and complexity. This is an excellent example and stunning value at this price. This is a very richly flavoured red which meets its match with all hearty foods. Great drinking now and over the next three years.
-
Canadoro Martinborough Pinot Gris 2009
NZD $14.95
Outstanding value here. Normally $24.95. Everyone who has tried this can't believe the price of this and they keep coming back for more. Apricot, quince and pears on the nose with a rich texture on the palate complimented by a lovely balancing spiciness. Big and bold flavours with a richness kept under control by subtly restraining acidity. Amazing buying.
-
Tranquillity Bay Pinot Noir 2009
NZD $14.95
A lighter, fruity style Pinot Noir with a deep luscious cherry colour. Fine-grained velvety tannins and a long, spicy, forest floor finish. Subtle oak tantalizes the nose and palate.
-
Billyrock Station Limited Release Selection Shiraz 2006
NZD
$15.95$10.95There's never been such a demand for a Shiraz like the Billyrock. Tell everyone you know it has returned. Run down the street in your pyjamas with the news if you have to, but please do not mention us if you are arrested.Wine Spectator rated this 89/100 which is almost unheard of for any wine at $10.99. The Limited Release Selection wines are only made in years where the fruit is exceptional - and this wine is. From South East Australia, this wine stuck out in a lineup of over 20 wines - most of the others were twice the price. Lots of fruit without being too heavy. A beautiful, seamless softness on the palate and a finish that lasts and lasts. You'll be back for more. I guarantee it. -
Billyrock Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
NZD
$16.95$10.95A great follow on from the amazingly popular Shiraz. The Cabernet is flying out just as fast. From South Eastern Australia this wine is packed full of value and flavour. Crimson red with wild berry aromas and a long, rich palate with elegant fruit flavours. Fermented in tanks for 10–12 months and matured in French and American oak, this is great with spicy meats, curries and BBQ pork. Very very good value. -
Armantes Old Bush Vine Rosé 2008
NZD $16.95
A Rosé For Wine Drinkers At last - a serious rose that tastes like wine, not lolly water. Fully dry, with delicious, weighty fruit flavours, this is an intensely complex wine from a small, ancient block of vines in a forgotten (until recently) corner of Spain. Rosé has always been a bit of an also-ran (unless it's rose Champagne of course which is an entirely different story), but this wine is a real eye-opener that will delight even the most hardened rose cynic. When you look at how this wine is made you will see why. It comes from garnacha vines that are more than fifty years old on a single slope vineyard in Catalayud, Northern Spain. Catalayud was until very recently an overlooked corner of Spain. However it has never been hit by the phylloxera bug which devastated most of the European vineyards in the 1800s. The old vines and very low yields give wines that are very intensely flavoured. This is a superbly complex wine that will go well with virtually any meal. Serve only lightly chilled to bring out its complex flavours.
-
Lonestone Marlborough Pinot Gris 2009
NZD $16.95
Simply Outstanding In a sea of disappointing pinot gris out there, this is a little gem. and I would say going by the feedback of those of you who have tried this, it's one of the best you will find for the price. Negociants Steve Bennett and Matthew Deller taste literally dozens of wines before selecting which to put under their Lonestone label. Just released, this soft, flavoursome, fresh and dry wine is a top pinot gris that puts many at $30 or above to shame. Drinking beautifully but will hold well for another 2-3 years. Gold Medal quality.
-
Corazon Oratia Syrah 2007 4.5 Stars - Sam Kim
NZD $17.95
And it's only $17.95 An impressive Syrah by Shayne Cox from grapes grown in Oratia, West Auckland. It's deeply coloured and beautifully perfumed with black plum, cherry, spice and vanilla oak. The palate is well fruited and silky smooth showing nicely integrated acidity and supple tannins. It's sumptuous and satisfying with a lovely dry finish. Drinking well now through to 2013.
-
Hoppers Crossing Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008
NZD $17.95
You could easily pay well over $25 for a wine of this quality. Many of you think it's a great buy at $19.95. Now only $16.95 but for a limited time. A bright cherry red wine with a pretty nose of strawberry and cherry and a touch of dried herbs. This is moderately bodied Pinot Noir, showing good definition of strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit flavours with some nice leathery complexity too. Oak has been used judiciously and is in delicious harmony with the structure and weight of the wine. The mid-palate shows a lovely creamy texture with ripe, soft tannins. Hard to beat.
-
Omaka Springs Pinot Gris 2009
NZD $17.95
"4 Stars. 91/100. Lovely pure fruit flavours with focused fresh pear , floral and white peach. There's a suggestion of sweetness to begin with but the wine finishes fairly dry. A silken texture impresses. A very attractive Pinot Grigio style." Bob Campbell.
-
Corazon Rose 2009
NZD $17.95
Summer in a bottleThis is my favourite wine at the moment. Even in the cooler months of the year, this is a favourite for many of you. The most appealing thing about this wine is that it is made from Syrah, which makes it more complex and flavoursome than most other Rose's which are made from Pinot Noir. I've had a lot of comments from people that this is one of the best they've had.
-
La Multa Old Vine Garnacha 2007
NZD $18.95
Hand harvested from 45+ year-old bush vines grown on mountain hillsides, crafted by Norrel Robertson MW using the best of New World winemaking techniques (temperature controlled fermentation, gentle pneumatic pressing) and local knowledge (minimal oak interference, no fining or filtration). “Fantastic concentration on the nose and palate. Superb value for 45-year-old vine Garnacha.” Nick Baile MW “If there is a better-value red on the market at the moment I have not tasted it. If big flavours of spice, and dark fruits are your bag, then buy a case of this” Hamish Anderson, The Daily Telegraph
-
Chanarmuyo Estate Syrah 2006
NZD $18.95
This is just outstanding. I've taken all of the NZ allocation of the 2006 vintage as I think this is THE red wine buy of the year and the only one you'll need for winter. Drinking beautifully now. You might think you were drinking a wine worth $50+ here. It was rated in the Top 10 Best Value Wines in Metro Magazine. Paul Tudor MW says... "If there is a classier, more concentrated sub-$20 red in New Zealand, I have not found it yet. Outstanding wine, a steal at this price." Lots of complex flavour which reminded me of how a top end Aussie Shiraz used to taste but more complex and with more layers of flavours. I couldn't pass this up. As you work your way through the glass (and bottle) this opens up and gets better and better. Full on but elegant with rich black fruit flavours with chocolate and spice and black olives. Guaranteed Amazement.
-
Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Gris 2008
NZD $18.95
Double Gold Pinot Gris This wine is made by Simon Waghorn, perhaps better known as winemaker for Astrolabe, and he has again come up trumps with one of the best-rated pinot gris from the 2008 vintage. This is a full-flavoured, off-dry style that is elegant and flavoursome. Normal retail is around $25 so this is a top buy.
-
Terriero Salento 2006
NZD
$18.95$14.95 NZD $14.20Soft and Supple from the South This is one of those red wines that can be described simply as 'delicious'. It is made from a blend of the two Puglian red grape varieties, negroamaro and primitivo, and has a deep colour and intense yet soft array of flavours. It is quite suggestive of a merlot or shiraz but has a softness that makes it good drinking with or without food. Not designed for ageing, but will be good for a number of years. -
Kerr Farm P06 Kumeu Pinotage 2007 - New Vintage
NZD $19.95
This has been one of my favourites for a very long time. Very interesting flavours going on with this wine which is made from grapes from officially New Zealands oldest Pinotage vines, which are over 40 years old, influencing much of the complex flavours.Bright in its ruby crimson colour, attractively scented, floral with hints of lavender and berry. Creamy oak fills the palate which is ripe, juicy and velvety textured with fruit intensity and oak complexity to the backbone. Well integrated acidity and a touch of Pinotage's signature rusticity to the finish together with a spicy flourish makes this a very good and utterly enjoyable red wine. Even better the next day. A real gem.
-
Discovery Point Fleur 2009
NZD $19.95
Blending of different grape varieties has of course been common in red wine making and is starting to gain as much interest in the white varieties. Once you try this you will understand why. It just makes sense! This is an outstanding blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer which is rich, dry and aromatic with the Riesling providing structure, the Pinot Gris richness and body and the Gewürztraminer intense floral aromas. Everyone who has tried this comes back for more. Great on its own or with seafood, white meats and Asian cuisine.
-
Trentham Petit Verdot 2008
NZD $19.95
Silver medal NZ International Wine Show 2009 and Silver medal NZ Top 100 2009. This, a favourite for many of you has returned and the 2008 marks the fifth release of this wine. It has deep red purple colour with floral and berry aromas. These characters along with mocha and spice are present on the palate which is completed with supportive oak and a velvety tannin finish.
-
Discovery Point Marlborough Dry Riesling 2009
NZD $19.95
Marlborough Dry Riesling That Really Is Dry It is always a struggle to find a quality NZ riesling that is truly dry yet still displays quality fruit. This wine, from a single vineyard in Marlborough, is a superb example. It is quite rich, with lovely fruit flavours, yet is fully dry. A great food wine and with cellaring potential.
-
Breaksea Sound Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008
NZD $19.95
Breaksea not "Break the Bank" This is truly worth $30+. In Metro Magazine this month, Paul Tudor MW says... "Cherrycake and spice aromatics, solid, chunky berry flavours and a ripe, round mouthfeel. This vintage has finesse and structure and is the best value Otago pinot on the market. "This wine has amazed everyone who tries it for its quality and value. Sourced from a single vineyard with grape yields less than half most pinot noirs, which makes a lot less wine but which gives added concentration. If you are a Central Otago pinot noir fan you must try this if you haven't already. Drinking well now and over the next couple of years.
-
Artisan Late Harvest Riesling 2008 - 375ml
NZD $19.95
Astounding value here for a dessert wine of this quality. A fruit driven wine from Marlborough with hints of botrytis influence. The initial sweet entry is well balanced with crisp acidity and a refreshingly dry finish. It is just 12% alcohol and is best served lightly chilled. The wine is succulent but not cloying with excessive residual sugar. The perfect complement to cheese, pate’ and fruit platters. It's light and fresh with lots of appealing fruity characters.
-
Forrest Estate The Doctors Riesling 2009
NZD $19.95
Now assuming cult status in the New Zealand wine scene the Doctors’ Riesling continues to amaze wine critics and novices alike. Trophy at the Air NZ Wine Awards. -
Discovery Point Sauvignon Blanc 2009
NZD $19.95
A distinct departure from over-whelming, tropical fruit flavoured show styles of Sauv. Inspired by the great styles of the Loire Valley in France, it is an elegant, finely textured, completely dry Marlborough Sauv that is a perfect partner with fine seafood or worth savouring on its own. Rivals the best of NZ.
-
Tranquillity Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2009
NZD
$19.95$10.95Turning a $20 wine into a Quaffer! My biggest selling wine and I can hardly keep up with the demand. Everyone agrees it is truly worth $20+. If you want the bargain of the year when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc, this is it. "Way better than anything I've got from the supermarket" is a popular comment. "Why drink any other Sauv?" is another. Packed full of delicious ripe tropical fruit with a lovely crisp finish. Very easy drinking. -
Corazon Hawkes Bay Syrah 2008
NZD $21.95
One of only 8 Syrahs to get a Gold Medal at the recent Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. All of the others are $35+ including some of the big names like Saint Clair and the Trinity Hill Homage at $120 a bottle. Even before this great result for this wine, made by West Auckland winemaker Shayne Cox, it had already gathered a strong following here at La Cantina. Syrah is Shayne's favourite wine to make, and his efforts really show in this wine with an amazing array of flavours going on. Very fruit driven, rich and powerful with dark berry fruits, spice and leather with a long and very memorable finish. This is a steal at $21.95. Syrah loves air - decant before drinking to allow the flavours to open up.
-
Luna Argenta Prosecco NV
NZD $21.95
100% Prosecco Light and elegant, this is a perfect aperitif or match for south east Asian cuisine. Tiny bubbles and aromas of delicate flowers, bee pollen with a whiff of berries. Crisp with plenty of flavours of nectarine and apple peel flavours, honeysuckle and citrus. Lovely acidity and a creamy honey and mineral flavoured finish.
-
Vega Barcelona Cava
NZD $22.95
Cava, a sparking wine which is made in exactly the same way as Champagne, has fully established its identity in markets abroad in the last thirty years yet specialized bodegas - or Cava houses - have been producing on a commercial scale since the end of the 19th century. Cava’s name derives from the Spanish word for an underground cellar. Today Cava is second only to Champagne in world sales of sparkling wine.A medium dry style that is clean and fresh which, sorry to say, beats the pants off most New Zealand sparklings. You will find that the bottles contents will disappear very quickly...
-
Terravin Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2006
NZD $24.95
I first tried this 3 years ago and thought in a few years time this could be brilliant. It certainly is! And it's still got a few years left in it yet. The acidity has dropped away slightly and the flavours have intensified and hang around on the palate for so long. This is very different than your average Marlborough Sauv. A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon with moorish flavours of guava, limes, green apple, kiwifruit and lemongrass. The Semillon gives it some lanolin notes that balance the herbacousness of the Sauvignon Blanc beautifully and gives it a crisp acidity and finishes dry. A great food wine and will come alive with seafood risotto, shellfish, fettuccine alfredo or chicken chow mein. A must try for all.
-
Marotti Campi Salmariano Verdicchio dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico Riserva 2003
NZD $24.95 NZD $22.95
Intensely Flavoured Dry White from the Marches Marotti Campi vineyard is based in the vicinity of Morro D'Alba , an ancient village in the Marches region , north of Ancona. Grapes have been grown here for centuries, in the centre of the DOC areas of Lacrima di Morro D'Alba and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi .The Marotti Campi family has owned land here since the 19th century. They have approximately 54 hectares of vines surrounding the family villa consisting of 23 hectares of Lacrima, 23 of Vedicchio and 8 of "international" varietals. All the grapes are harvested by hand. To emphasize their link to the land their wines are named after old XI century sites. Salmariano is named after the XI century castrum ( castle) built at the boundary of the company's vineyard. The grapes are harvested late for maximum ripeness and aged partly in small oak barriques for 12 months. This is a superb example of the verdicchio grape at its best.It is a bold, nutty dry white with hints of butterscotch and oak. A very exciting wine.
-
Corazon Chardonnay 2009
NZD $24.95
New ReleaseThe fruit for this wine is sourced from Kumeu in West Auckland where, by tasting this wine you will certainly agree the quality of the wines from this part of the country have improved immensely. -
Chateau de Fontenille 2006
NZD $24.95
Sauvignon blanc-based white from Bordeaux This wine comes from a small family vineyard in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux. A blend of 80% sauvignon blanc, 10% semillon and 10% muscadelle, it is a full bodied dry white with beautifully clean fruit flavours. Weightier than a New Zealand sauvignon - a very good match with foods such as fish and lighter white meat dishes.
-
Spy Valley Envoy Pinot Gris 2009 - New Vintage
NZD $26.95
Flying out by the dozenThis has become even more popular than their standard Pinot Gris at $20. Juicy, pure fruit characters carry on from the nose. Light, crisp and refreshing, the palate is very accessible now but will reveal its more complex side with maturity.
-
Kuratau River Pinot Grigio 2008
NZD $27.95
Silver Medal WinnerI instantly fell in love with this. The initial fruit sweetness was quite a pleasant surprise and first thought that a glass or two will be enough, but the bottle soon disappeared! Like the best wines of Italy, this Grigio shows rich fruit tones, floral aromas and tropical palate weight. The long slow growing season found in Taupo protects the delicate aromatic components of Pinot Grigio. Melon flavours also linger on the palate mixed with lush sweet tropical fruits. Very impressive!
-
Pierpaolo Pecorari Sauvignon 2005
NZD $28.95
Sauvignon Blanc at its Finest What a world away from New Zealand sauvignon blanc this is. For a start, pretty well all NZ sauvignons at 4 years of age will be well past their best, if not having fallen apart comepletely. This wine is fresh and alive, weighty, fruit driven, powerful wine with none of the grassy, acidic overtones characteristic of NZ sauvignon. In fact it is much more like a French sauvignon (particularly Sancerre), albeit perhaps a little fruitier than would be typical. All in all, a superb wine and, comparing it to its French counterparts again, very well priced at $28.95. It will continue to live for some time yet, developing some lovely honeyed/butterscotch characters over the next couple of years.
-

-
